• FMA DISCUSSES HOUSE BILL FOR DISABLED VETS IN THE FEDERAL WORKFORCE - August 6, 2015

  For over a year, the Federal Managers Association (FMA) discussed with members of Congress the plight of newly hired federal employees who qualify under the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) as at least 30 percent disabled. As a first year federal employee, many struggle with allotted sick leave while trying to attend medically necessary appointments with VA doctors. FMA's Government Affairs Representative Katie Maddocks discussed with Federal News Radio's Jared Serbu the Wounded Warriors Federal Leave Act, H.R. 5229, and the benefits it would provide. The bill calls for 104 hours of sick leave to first year federal employees who qualify as 30 percent disabled so they have sufficient leave to attend medical appointments for their service related disabilities. Representative Stephen Lynch (D-MA) introduced the bill, and Representative Blake Farenthold (R-TX) is a cosponsor. FMA is currently working with members of the Senate to introduce similar language in the upper chamber.
