Press Release

  • FMA COMMENDS CONGRESS FOR PASSING DHS FUNDING BILL ENDING HISTORIC SHUTDOWN - May 1, 2026
  • Alexandria, VA – On April 30, 2026, the House of Representatives passed legislation to fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through the remainder of Fiscal Year 2026, ending the longest agency shutdown in American history. The bill passed by voice vote and President Trump signed it into law on the 76th day of the current shutdown. FMA National President Linda S. Lentjes released the following statement:

"Today is an important and long-overdue day for the tens of thousands of dedicated public servants at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). After 76 days of inexcusable uncertainty – on top of the shutdown last October – Congress has finally acted. We are relieved, but we are also clear-eyed: this should never have taken this long.

"The men and women of DHS — including the Transportation Security Administration, Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency — never stopped showing up. They continued to protect the American people, often without the assurance of a paycheck. Their resilience and professionalism in the face of this crisis is a testament to the character and dedication of our federal workforce.

"Countless employees have struggled with bills, and some have simply left their jobs as this shutdown dragged on. Every additional hour of uncertainty caused real harm to real people and to the critical missions they carry out on behalf of all Americans.

"FMA will continue to stand with federal managers and supervisors across DHS and throughout the government to ensure they have the resources, stability, and support they need to serve the American people. Today is finally a step in the right direction. Looking to the future, we urge all members of Congress to do their jobs and pass appropriations well in advance of the start of Fiscal Year 2027."
